Why Does My Child Suddenly Have Body Odour?

One day you may notice something you didn't expect - your child suddenly smells a little different after playing, running around, or coming home from school.

And you may wonder, "Is this too early?"

Usually, no. ❤️

As children grow, their bodies slowly start changing. One of the early changes can be underarm body odour.

This is a normal part of growing up.

So, where does the smell come from?

As kids grow, their underarms just start sweating a little more than before - that's really all it is.

The sweat itself doesn't actually smell. It's what happens when that sweat meets the skin that creates the odour.

That's why you may notice more of it after:

  • Playing outside
  • Sports or dancing
  • A long day at school
  • Wearing a uniform for several hours
  • Hot and humid weather

And yes - Indian summers can definitely make it more noticeable! ☀️

Does body odour mean puberty has started?

Not necessarily.

Body odour can be one of the early signs that a child's body is growing and changing. It can happen around the age of 8 and sometimes even earlier or later.

For many children, it's simply a normal part of growing up.

If body odour is the only change you are noticing, there is usually no reason to panic.

But if you start noticing a few other changes happening around the same time, it's a good idea to just mention it to your pediatrician at your next visit - they can tell you what's normal and what to expect next.

What can parents do?

The good news is that this doesn't need to become a big deal.

Think of it as just another part of your child's daily routine - like brushing their teeth or combing their hair.

1. Start with a good bath

Gently wash the underarms every day, especially after sports or lots of outdoor activity.

2. Let them take charge

This is an important one.

Instead of making body odour something embarrassing, teach your child how to look after themselves. Let them apply their own deodorant in private and make it part of getting-ready-for-school.

3. Choose a gentle deodorant

A deodorant can help control body odour without stopping your child's normal sweating.

And remember - sweating is normal and important. Our bodies use it to cool themselves down.

4. Don't make it embarrassing

Try not to point it out in front of siblings, friends, or other family members.

A simple, matter-of-fact approach works best:

"Your body is growing, so you may notice some new smells. That's completely normal. Let's add deodorant to your morning routine."

No shame. No teasing. Just another little step towards growing up. 💜

Deodorant or antiperspirant - what's the difference?

They're not quite the same.

Deodorants help manage the smell.

Antiperspirants reduce how much you sweat.

For a child who's just starting to notice some odour, you usually don't need to stop them from sweating at all - a gentle deodorant that handles the smell is enough.

We also keep our formula aluminium-free, so it's simply one less thing for you to think about.
